 C H I N LAND OF THE DRAGON

Shenzhen and Guangzhou

China was in a veil for a long time and now the veil has been lifted and people flock to see the wonders of China. China is vast, a country whose population tops the world’s chart.  What impressed me most were the hardworking Chinese people who have made China into what it is today.

Tower Guangzhou
I have the opportunity to visit Shenzhen and Guangzhou on two occasions and on both trips I made it a point to see what I have missed.

Language is the biggest problem, as you will have a hard time to communicate with people except Shenzhen, which borders Hong Kong.
Mosque in Guangzhou
This is South China and don’t worry about Muslim food as there are many Muslims and even one of the oldest mosques in China is found in Guangzhou.

Guangzhou or Canton as it was called is the south gate of China. The urban transportation is generally good due to the orderly planning of roads and the developed city-buses, taxis and subways. From the airport there are many shuttle buses to take you to your destination.

The hotels here are comfortable and I stayed in Holiday Inn in Guangzhou, which is directly on the Shang Xia Jiu Pedestrian Street,. So you don’t have to talk sign language with taxi drivers. This is a great place to shop and bargain.

The girls here simply love to take photos with you and I was like an artist when I walked along Shang Xia Jiu Pedestrian Street

Shopping is fantastically great. You name it and you will get it. Everything under the sun is available in China. But many are only for wholesale. You can spend the whole day just in one or two shopping malls. The malls are huge and divide according to clothing, toys, stationery and others. If you choose to visit places of interest there are many in and around Guangzhou.

During my second visit I had two university students as my guides.  They could speak broken English and  I had an unforgettable incident with them. I askes them whether they can buy some raw eggs so I can boil them in the room for breakfast. To my surprise they brought 20 boiled eggs.

I had a very difficult time asking them to take me to the oldest mosque in Guangzhou.

Taking a bullet train is worth experiencing the Chinese technology. Fast, comfortable and punctual. The trains just take half an hour to cover a distance of 140km.  You can fly past villages, small towns and farms all the way.

I checked into Shangri-La Shenzhen just a few kilometres from the railway station and also close to Hong Kong.

The city is vibrant and easy to communicate. But be aware, full of cheats especially at shopping malls.

They can do wonders and don’t end up losing everything here. Beware where you shop, what you buy and how you pay.

There are plenty of imitation watches, mobile phones, leather bags and electronic gadgets. But look before you leap or you will end up hurt.

There is a place called mini world and you can see the replica of many world famous buildings. It is worth a trip.

You don’t have to go to Paris to see the Eiffel Tower or to India to see the Taj Mahal. Every miniature is here for you to wander and see.

The windmills of Holland, Opera House of Australia and even the Victoria falls are here.

There are many more sights to see and enjoy at this wonderful park.

Halal food is not a problem at all. Transportation is simply superb in China.  Comfortable buses and commuter trains take you to every destination you desire.

Travelling to China is truly a wonderful experience. It takes you back into time to see the old China and also takes you forward to see the modern China.

Your tour of China will enlighten you on how a country with the largest population in the world can transform into a disciplined successful nation.
